AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FUTURE OF YOUR CLUB:

The dog world is being widely reported as being in a downturn nationwide. The fortunes of our clubs and the future of our sport is said to be in decline. Evidence of this can be found in low show attendances and entries. Listening to many conversations at the shows the consensus is that the decline is due to the expense of travel, accommodation and entry fees. Less palatable are some of the reasons discussed openly by show people for the approaching demise of our sport. I will attempt to frankly report and identify what I feel are the most important of these issues.

The dwindling numbers of dog entries and competitors; the aging population of our clubs and our seeming inability to attract young people to our sport.
The on going discussion on impartiality and integrity of judging.
These issues in the main contribute to the general feeling of why do we carry on doing this?

These are big issues and seemingly insurmountable.

So, why do we carry on doing this?

In case people need reminding, we are Cantabrians. Many of us have lived through the destruction of a large part of our city and experienced 12,000 plus earthquakes and aftershocks. The major lesson learned from this huge event was the importance of our support bases; family, friends, neighbours, immediate community, and dog community. So when placed in context the issues surrounding our sport are not so insurmountable.

What we have is a community nurtured over years of showing. We have formed the unlikeliest of friendships, shared innumerable experiences all bonded together by our often inexplicable love of our dogs. If I had to hazard a guess this would be the reason why we carry on doing this. Given this, does it not make a great deal of commonsense to put some effort into rebuilding our own club and its community?

This brings me to the main subject of this letter.

As the current President I am inviting every individual in the Canterbury Toy Dog Society to a vital meeting. Date 30 June, Venue Obedience club rooms, Marshlands Road, time 3pm.

Our club needs all of our members support. We have decided to reconvene our AGM due to the low member turnout on the 27 May. The democratic process requires participation. If you want change you need to be part of it! As a club I believe we need to reconnect. We need to get a consensus on what the membership requires and most importantly decide the future direction of the CTDS. We are in the enviable position of being financially secure. We have enough people who are prepared to take on the executive roles and be part of the committee, so for CTDS to flourish we need to have the full membership actively involved and engaged.

It all comes down to you and your willingness to attend this meeting and share your ideas. This then will give us the opportunity to: openly discuss, instigate and implement change and begin to address those insurmountable issues we have identified, in the process, revitalise our club.

The Agenda for this AGM will be:

Apologies

Call for items of General Business

A brief look at our Club Aims and Objectives (a copy of the rules will be provided for everyone)

Club History

Minutes of 2012 Annual General Meeting

Annual Report and 2013 Balance Sheet

Notices of Motion

Election of Officers and Committee and Members

Discussion on Club planning moving forward

Items of General Business

Contrary to my Presidents report prepared for the AGM, both Jeanette and I will be available as committee members if required. I look forward to seeing you all on the 30th June.

<Background to the Canterbury Toy Dog Society Halligan Memorial Championship Show
Percy and Vera Halliagn were Patrons of the Canterbury Toy Dog Society. For many years Percy was the Club auditor.

Both Percy and Vera supported the club although they did not show Toy dogs themselves. Traditionally they donated a silver teaspoon to every best of breed at the Clubs championship show. When Percy died a substantial bequest was made to the Club. An additional bequest was also received by the Club on the death of Vera.

The Club therefore decided to commemorate the support received from Percy and Vera by holding an annual Halligan Memorial Championship Show

This Show is sponsored by Royal Canin visit their website at: http://www.royalcanin.co.nz/

The hairless is warm to the touch and should have no hair at all on its body; just a crest on the head, plume on the lower two-thirds of the tail and sock’s covering the long feet. The powderpuff has a veil of long hair. This is a fastidious breed and neither variety has a doggy odour. There are also two rather distinct types; one racy and fine boned, the other heavier in body and bone. The good tempered breed is active and graceful with a height ranging from 23 – 30 cm (9 – 13 in) and weight preferably not exceeding 5.5 kg (12lb).
