Comacchio Kennels

When looking for a second breed to work with, the name 'Lagotto Romagnolo' took my interest. On investigation, I found a curly, medium sized dog of the Gundog Group, originally from the 13th century marshlands of Comacchio in North-eastern Italy. Its size, and disposition, really appealed to us and Azzuronastro Callmepippa arrived from Rena Hendersons Azzuronastro Kennel, in Australia, in December 2006. Pippa attained Championship status at her first show after turning one year old, and had age group wins as well. We were eagerly awaiting her season earlier this year, to begin our breeding program, when she began to limp. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer which was rapidly disabling her, and we sadly had her put to sleep. Pippa with her waggy tail and cheeky disposition will be with us forever. She was a wonderful ambassador of her breed, the first NZ Champion, and the South Islands first Lagotto, she had many admirers.
With Pip's passing, we realised a litter of Lagottos from the Comacchio Kennel was not going to happen in the near future, until Pippa's breeders, Rena and Jimmy Henderson, very generously offered us a 4yr old bitch. Azzuronastro Aniela or Dolly to her mates!! Dolly is an Australian Champion and a first cousin to Pippa on their dams side, and they both have the same sire. She attained NZ Championship status in November, 2009. Also last year, Dolly was mated to a young NZ dog, NZ Ch. Takahoa Te Tahi, and in February 2010, their efforts produced 8 pups, one of which died 4 days later. We are now the proud breeders of the South Islands first litter of Lagotto Romagnolo, 7 puppies...5 bitches and 2 dogs, their colours being 6 brown roan and one orange and white.

I have 1 pup left from my current litter, born 3/3/11. He is, at present, a brown, but is likely to change to brown roan as he matures. He is on full registration with the NZKC, he has a lovely temperament, his JE status is Normal, and he is of show quality. If you are interested in this little guy, please give me a call, Chris (021 036 8577) or email I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
